A kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) participate in the coordination of cellular signalling. They directly interact with signalling proteins such as kinases, phosphodiesterases and protein phosphatases, direct them to defined cellular sites, and thereby facilitate local signal processing and integration. Our group is studying compartmentalized cAMP signalling in renal principal cells and cardiac myocytes. In cardiac myocytes, we have recently reported that AKAP18delta directly interacts with phospholamban. This interaction is crucial for the reuptake of Ca2+ from the cytoplasm into the sarcoplasmic reticulum.

In projects, funded by the GoBio programme of the BMBF, the EU (project www.thera-cAMP.eu), and the DFG), we are seeking to identify small molecules that interfere with direct AKAP-dependent protein-protein interactions and to validate such interactions as drug targets. We offer a postdoc position to a candidate who is motivated to identify small molecules disrupting intracellular AKAP-dependent protein-protein interactions in cardiac myocytes and to characterise their effects in vitro and in vivo. The project requires a strong background in signal transduction, molecular and cell biology, and molecular pharmacology. The use of cloning techniques, protein biochemistry, fluorescence microscopy (laser scanning microscopy, FRET), and screening small molecule libraries utilizing high throughput assays is essential.

The international PhD program of the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies (BSRT) offers outstanding interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for students of natural sciences and engineering who want to pursue a career in the field of Regenerative Medicine and aim at translating their scientific discoveries into clinical applications.

The BSRT is a collaboration between the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Freie Universität zu Berlin, the Technische Universität, the Univeristy of Potsdam, Max Planck and Helmholtz Institutes and other high-ranking research institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg. This collaboration offers top class scientific training leading to the award of a PhD degree for students with a Master’s or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, veterinary medicine, chemistry, engineering or physics. The program will start in April 2009. It is not necessary to hold the Master’s degree at the time of application but it must have been awarded prior to enrollment into the program. Students admitted to the PhD program will be supported by stipends.

The international PhD program of the BSRT comprises a series of courses, seminars and research projects designed to equip students with the essentials to become effective scientists in Regenerative Medicine. Interaction between biological, engineering and clinical research will be fostered through mutual supervision of each PhD project by top class researchers from different disciplines from academia and industry.

Application deadline is the 15th November 2008. Please use only the online application form provided on our website at www.bsrt.de where you can also find further information about the BSRT and the application procedure. The online application forms will be available from 20th September 2008.

The BSRT is an equal opportunities Graduate school. We particularly encourage applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons and the BSRT operates a policy whereby preference is given to disabled applicants who have qualifications equivalent to those of able bodied persons applying for the same position.

The Munich based International Max Planck Research School for Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences (IMPRS-LS) has openings for PhD student positions in the international PhD program “Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences: from Biology to Medicine” IMPRS-LS is jointly conducted by the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in cooperation with the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and the Technical University Munich. The PhD program covers the areas of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular medicine, neurobiology and structural biology. The 3 to 4 year program, entirely taught in English, provides comprehensive scientific training in a superb and vibrant research environment with state of the art facilities and cutting edge research projects. Prospective students can choose one out of more than 45 challenging research projects offered by our faculty members. Although students specialize in a particular research topic, the interdisciplinary context of the program facilitates interactions with other research groups and fosters the ability of cross-frontier thinking. Laboratory work is supplemented by seminars, summer schools, elective courses, training in soft skills and participation in national or international conferences. Currently, more than 250 doctoral students from all over the world are working at the Max Planck Institutes and, together with numerous doctoral students from close by university laboratories, lay ground for a lively, open and dynamic international atmosphere. Highly qualified candidates with a deep commitment to basic and/or clinical research are invited to apply. Applicants should hold a MSc (or an equivalent degree) in biological sciences, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, medicine or a related discipline. A one year preparatory program is available to a limited number of outstanding applicants with a Bachelor’s degree allowing a fast track path towards a doctoral degree.

A PhD position is available at the Unit of Molecular Physciology of Plants and Micro-organisms of the University of Leuven (Belgium) for a motivated scientist with an interest in molecular plant physiology, signalling, transgenic plant generation and biotechnological applications.

This position is targeted at candidates from non-EEA countries (European Economic Area = European Union + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and have a Masters degree in Life Sciences (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering…). Applications are invited from enthusiastic graduates with an excellent study track record. We offer a challenging research environment and an intense experience leading to a PhD degree.

Mankind is becoming increasingly dependent on plant production, not only for staple foods, but also for energy, fine chemicals, functional foods, drugs and vaccines. Four KULeuven labs have joined forces to contribute to the development of superior crops with higher yields and biomass through optimization of carbon allocation and stress tolerance.

Plants use glucose and sucrose ’signals’ to coordinate metabolism withenvironmental and hormonal signals for optimal growth and development. So far, no sucrose sensor(s) have been identified in plants. Sucrose signalling affects germination, senescence, flowering and anthocyanin production. The specific induction of anthocyanin biosynthesis will be exploited for massive screening of Arabidopsis seedlings from a T-DNA insertion mutant collection on growth medium containing high sucrose concentrations or inhibitors/treatments causing intracellular accumulation of sucrose, with visual and non-destructive selection for the absence of the deep purple colour of anthocyanin accumulation.

To avoid the isolation of (numerous anticipated) mutants in the complex and extensive anthocyanin synthesis pathway, further selection will test for the expression of the MYB75 transcription factor, a key sucrose-induced upstream regulator of anthocynanin production. T-DNA-flanking sequences of mutants deficient in MYB75 induction will be identified. In addition, a reporter line expressing a luciferase gene under control of sucrose induced repression of translation will be mutagenized and mutants with deficient translation repression will be isolated using luminescence imaging. Affected genes will be identified by map-based cloning. Candidate sucrose sensor genes isolated in these two screens will be characterized in transgenic plants and expressed heterologously. The derived proteins will be purified for further detailed characterization and sucrose binding studies. The discovery of a sucrose sensor will enable the deciphering of the downstream events in the sucrose signaling pathway using protein interaction analyses, cellular (protoplast) transient expression and transgenics.
This scholarship includes social security and insurances.
